Over the weekend I got invited to attend a Breastfeeding Class. I was a little hesitant to go at first because my husband would be unable to make it cause of a scheduled board meeting and my mom had already planned a trip to Palawan that weekend. I also figured that for any advice I could always go to my mom since she breastfed all 5 of us kids, or GP’s mom who has six kids of her own! I had also been reading so many books and that I felt I didn’t need to be flooded with more information… But on that day, I decided why not learn a little more. So together with my high school friend Maybel, I headed over to L.A.T.C.H.
LATCH stands for Lactation, Attachment, Training, Counseling and Help. They are a non-profit organization offering quality lactation education and peer counseling services to mothers who wish to breastfeed. The session was held in the beautiful Alba residence (Thank you for the warm welcome and good food Amelia :)
Here are some of the things I’ve learned:
Breastfeeding babies get natural DHA and ARA that support brain development. Formula fed babies risk lowered I.Q. by 8 points. And Studies show that the longer babies are breastfed, the higher the I.Q.
Breastfeeding burns 500 calories a day helping mothers get back their pre-pregnancy shape.
Breastfeeding saves money! Artificial feeding is about P1,000 a week on formula!
Learned about Unang Yakap:
Skin to skin contact between mother and new born and delayed washing for at least six hours prevents hypothermia, infection and hypoglycemia and stimulates breathing. Properly timed cord clamping and cutting means waiting for the cord pulsations to stop between 1 to 3 minutes. This helps prevents newborn and protects premature newborns from brain hemorrhage.
Breastfeeding may continue even if….
Mother is tired.
Mother is sick with common flu or fever.
Many maternal medications are compatible, check online at LACTmed
Mother had a caesarian section
Mother has had a flu shot or MMR shot
Even if baby is has teeth or is walking already
Even beyond the age of two!
Here are some of the photos from the event :)
